General Information
Behavior Sheets
Fifth graders will record how well their behavior was at the end of each day. On Fridays students are asked to take these home for parents to see. If they bring them back on Monday morning with a parent signature, they earn something from the class treasure chest.
In our class we use a card system for discipline. The goal for each student is to stay on green.
Green - Doing Great!
Yellow - Warning: stop and think
Orange - Loss of privilege
Blue - Parent Contact
Red - Office visit
Progress Reports
Progress reports are sent out from the office mid-quarter, however, you can expect your child to take one home on most Fridays. This will allow you to better track your child's progress. As with the behavior sheets, if they bring them back on Monday morning with a parent signature, they earn something from the class treasure chest.
Assemblies
Student of the week assemblies occur in the elementary school every other week. If your child is receiving an award I will contact you to share this recognition with your child.
Breakfast & Lunch
Breakfast is served every morning beginning at 8:00am. Lunch is served for elementary students at 11:45am. A monthly menu will be given to students at the beginning of each month.
Birthdays
Each fifth grader is special and deserves a day just for them. You're welcome to bring treats in to celebrate your child's birthday in class. Please let us know ahead of time for planning purposes if you'd like to.
Class Parties
We will have a classroom party to celebrate Christmas Break, Valentines Day, and the last day of school. Reminders will be sent home to parents prior to these parties.
Book Check Out
Fifth graders have library time on Wednesdays. They will be able to check out books from our school library each week at that time. They also have the option of checking out books from our class library. Please encourage your child to take care of these books and return them in a timely manner.
Incentives
I try very hard to reward good behavior and citizenship in our classroom. Therefore, students will earn gold cards, which are turned into the office for a weekly class drawing. Students in class who do well will periodically select a treat from our treasure chest. Also, students with ten consecutive green cards will be eligible to select an item from a special treasure chest.
Volunteer Work/Visits
Parents are always welcome to drop by our classroom. If you’d like to come in to help with small group or individual work, grading papers, or just to visit you're more than welcome to. We hope to see you soon.

Reading/WritingWe will be working with Pearson Language Arts and Math, which is our school wide curriculum. Students will read in leveled groups, pairs, individually at their level and with the whole group using material at our grade level. We'll do a variety of writing activities to become better writers. Some activities will include journal writing, and literature response journals. We'll work on increasing our vocabulary throughout the year as well. Research shows that increasing vocabulary increases reading comprehension.
